The Harper Creek Learning Center (HCLC) came into existence this 2024-2025 school year. It was modeled after other schools that were researched and visited. Ed Greenman, Principal of Harper Creek High School, and Stacy Deskins, Special Education Teacher Consultant, collaborated with a team of educators to brainstorm a name that would reflect the mission of this new space. The goal was to provide essential resources to students at Harper Creek High School. “We wanted it to be a place in which students were able to come to get testing accommodations, have a quiet place to work, or get some extra assistance with academics,” said Mrs. Deskins.
Mrs. Deskins elaborated, “We understand that every student has unique needs, and our team is here to help remove barriers to success. From extended testing times and private testing environments to assistive technologies, we tailor solutions that empower students to perform their best. We have had more than 1,200 logged entries in which students have utilized the HCLC this school year.”
Beyond accommodations, HCLC offers a variety of programs designed to meet diverse educational goals. The Learning Center is also utilized after school twice a week by a student club. Future goals include adding learning around preparing for standardized tests, enhancing academic skills, or exploring creative and professional development opportunities.
Mr. Greenman considers the HCLC to be a great addition to the high school and sees its potential to grow and serve the students of HCHS. He remarked, “Mrs. Deskins is the brainchild behind the Learning Center. We would not have this wonderful addition to the high school if it weren’t for her.”
The facility is equipped with modern resources, comfortable spaces, and skilled staff dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. The HCLC staff works closely with families and teachers to ensure seamless integration of accommodations and educational plans.
Mrs. Deskins expressed her gratitude to Mr. Greenman, Jessica Martin, and Shannon Vosburgh for their help in creating the HCLC. Reflecting on the Learning Center’s potential, she shared, “Our center is more than a place to learn—it’s a community that fosters growth, innovation, and inclusivity.”
